XChat
XChat is an instant messaging application developed by X Corporation, a subsidiary of Elon Musk, and will be officially launched on iOS devices and web pages on November 15, 2025.
This application is built on the Rust language, using Bitcoin style encryption technology and a new architecture design. It supports end-to-end encryption, message self destruction, and all types of file transfer functions, and has features such as anti screenshot, read and burn, group chat, and video calling.
Users can make cross platform audio/video calls by binding their X username, without the need for a phone number. This application supports large file sharing and can directly drag and drop tweets and videos from the X platform into conversations.
The official statement states that the core highlights of the application are focused on privacy and security, with all messages, calls, and media content using end-to-end encryption technology, supporting a large group of up to 481 people. XChat also integrates Grok AI assistant, which users can call with one click during the chat process. Although Musk claims to use "Bitcoin style encryption," security experts point out that it lacks independent third-party auditing and privacy labels show that user data is still collected, raising questions about its security.
In May 2023, X company launched encrypted messaging functionality for paying users for the first time, but suspended the feature in May 2025 for "improvements". In May 2025, as an upgraded version of X Company's encrypted messaging function, XChat will only be available for X paying users during the testing phase, adopting an ad free mode and requiring message content to be verified with a four digit password.
On November 15, 2025, X platform launched the Chat chat platform, replacing the original DM function. The new platform was launched on iOS devices and web pages, integrating audio and video calling, file sharing, and end-to-end encryption functions.
On February 13, 2026, Musk announced during a live broadcast that he would open source Grok Chat and launch an independent X chat application. On April 17, 2026, the XChat standalone messaging application was officially launched on the Apple iPhone/iPad platform.
